Act 1. Scenes 3 and 4
In these scenes we are encountered with Rita`s improvement. Her burning desire to be better than the ones who surround her makes her really stronger. Also, she realizes that studying is the key to success. As far as Frank is concerned, he just accompanies her. he makes her learn to take her own decisions . She has to make choices and his role is such a simple teacher who little by little will provide her with tools to be more independent .

What's "wrong" with the people around Rita, Lucía (so that she should want to be "better than them", I mean)? Have you seen Alez's entry on this? I guess you may have something to comment on that!
And why should Frank be fostering Rita's autonomy? Isn't it his job to make sure she passes her entrance examination?
I think Ale`s comment perfectly fits my mind. I guess she has been much clearer than me me in putting her ideas into words. So as I was saying, there is nothing wrong with Rita`s family or friends. The thing is that their culture is not the one Rita wants to have for the rest of her life. I think she wants to fly away . I think she wants much more and in wanting so, this culture is not enough for her. As regards Frank`s job, I think his original job was to make her pass her entrance exam but later on he gets to know Rita and things quite a lot.
Some questions to come back to as you get towards the end of the play:
1. Is it a question of choosing one culture to belong to?
2. As an educator, should Frank encourage Rita to reject her first culture?
3. As a teacher, is it a matter of personal choice for you whether to "instruct your students effectively so that they meet set standards" or "work so that they develop their skills and abilities to their full potential"?
Let's keep in touch!
Gladys
As regards culture, I think that we cannot choose the culture we want to belong to.However, we can perfectly choose to develop it. I mean, Rita cannot choose to be from another culture, though, she can decide to be different, or to correct certain aspects of her culture which make her feel unhappy, unsatisfied. And as an educator Frank should help her to improve, to make progress but by no means should he encourage her to quit her backgrounds.
I like what you mentioned , this idea that we ,as teachers should encourage our students to work so that they can develop their abilities and skills to their full potential.
So... do you believe in monoculturalism, Lucía? I wonder what Rita is doing by trying to enter college, if not choose what culture she wants to belong to... or do you mean she'll never be "one of the proper students", no matter how hard she tries?
Glad you think of our job as a question of developing student's potential!
LOL,
Gladys
