Act 1 Scene 5
I think that Frank may not want to see the play because he is not really interesting in the kind of actors who are going to perform it. Also, he may not want to get too much involved with Rita. I mean, I believe he wants to stay aloof . May be he is already feeling sth for her and so it would better if he doesn`t get so involved.

On what grounds can Frank find the amateurs performing "The Importance of Being Earnest" uninteresting, Lucía?
Now, if what he wanted was to keep his distance from Rita (which might lead to an interesting discussion on the "appropriate" distance between teachers and students in different cultures!), do you honestly think inviting her to the pub is a good way to keep it??
Looking forward to hearing from you,
Gladys
I think Frank has prejudices against these amateurs performers and I wonder if he also has prejudices against his students too.
From the education point of view this attitude of his shows me that sometimes teacher do not always give opportunities to ALL kinds of students, don't you agree????
I think he `s definitely not interesting in seeing such a well-known play performed by amateur actors.May be he just didn`t want to see such a play performed by "beginners". As regards Frank`s invitation to Rita to go to a pub, I think Frank`s real feelings betrayed him in a way. I think at that moment it`s Frank the man who is speaking and not the teacher.
Isn't Frank's assumption that amateur actors can only offer a poor performance a question of prejudice, Lucía? Silvia's point about how such prejudices are likely to affect his teaching are quite interesting, I'd say...
What do we learn from this scene about how social differences create a gap between Frank and Rita? Can that gap be bridged? How?
Finally, do you agree with Rita that you cannot learn at a pub? Is the classroom the place for learning, in your view?
See you around!
LOL,
Gladys
I think that Frank does have prejudices in the same way some teachers have. I strongly support Silvia`s comment when she says that not all teachers give the same opportunities to ALL students. And by doing so , we tend to foster or unfortunately hinder students learning process.
As far as the gap between Frank and Rita I think it will be bridged in the end. I think it is Rita`s wit which will contribute in this sense . There is a gap between them but Rita is so smart and ready to overcome any kind of obstacle and she will be the one who will make it.
As regards places to learn, I believe that learning is a neverending process, therefore it should not be restricted to places. However, we should make a distinction between the different kinds of learnings we are refering to .
