Act 1 Scene 1
How, precisely, can you tell from this first scene that Rita comes from a different social background to Frank?
One of the main hints is definitely her language, the way she addresses people, including Frank. the place where she works as well as the kinds of programmes she watches , like ITV as opposed to BBC.
Why does Rita want to study?
Personally, I think she wants to discover her real self. Also she wants to live a better life she knows she can do it.
What suggests you that she is not a stupid woman?
Her ambition. The way she thinks. The fact that she wants to improve tells us much of her personality. She lacks culture but she knows exactly how to get it.

Considering the differences in social background you've already identified, Lucía, would you recommned individual tutoring in Rita's case, or integration into a standard course, if the decision was in your hands?
I also meant to ask you:
Don't you feel that "finding her real self" and "learning to live a better life" are perhaps tasks she could better carry out with the help of a therapist rather than a Literature professor?
Eager to know what you think!
Love,
Gladys
PS: why do you say "Rita lacks culture"?
Well, in the end she did get into a course. I mean, after Summer holidays she has made lots of friends and she has become and entire "new" person. If the decision were in my hands I would let her get some knowledge from one to one classes and once she felt confident enough and would make her join a group.
As regards the possibility of going to a therapist in order to find her real self, I do not agree much on that. I think that sometimes we, humans, take so many different paths in order to discover our inner selves that not always going to a therapist is the best option.
I mean that Rita lacks formal or academic culture.
Some educators would argue 1-to-1 lessons for Rita would mean "discrimination", Lucía... Have you thought about what you might reply to that?
I agree with you that humans might find themselves in many ways, but I wonder whether that isn't asking too much of a teacher I mean, all things considered, is it Frank's job to help people find themselves? Or is he paid just to teach Literature?
Fianlly, as regards culture, there are two views of the concept which I think you're pondering here: culture as "the system of standards of a given discourse community" (as defined by Kramsch 1998), vs. "culture as civilization". Both meanings can be acceptable, as long as we don't think both concepts are the same! ;-)
Fondly,
Gladys
I still think that for Rita`s beginning a one-to-one lesson is the most appropiate one. She has some needs which are quite personal so I think that she may feel much better to take individual lessons. Mind you, I don`t think this is discrimination, on the contrary I think that at the beginning is the option for Rita`s personal needs.
As regards Frank`s job I think it is true that his main task is to teach Rita literature. However, teachers or good techers the ones who are really committed to sts go beyond this. I think they help sts to fly, to become independent, remember Mr Keats, in Death Poets Society?
I certainly like the way you describe our "job duties" ;-), Lucía!
Your comment reminded me of a post by myself after an empowering experience, led by a wonderful tutor... Hope you ever have the time to follow the link!
Fondly,
Gladys
