Act 1 Scene 2
Does Frank encourage Rita`s pursuit of knowledge or thwart it?
I guess it `s completely the other way about. It is Rita the one who encourages Frank to teach her. Yet, though Frank feels quite reluctant to help her, he feels deeply attracted to Rita and I believe that`s way he ends up teaching her.
What does she think about Frank`s room and about the proper students?
She considers that Frank`s room is a mess but the kind of mess that it`s just perfect. she would like to have a room like that someday.
as regards the proper students, she thinks they are the ones who attend classes regularly . they are the ones that read and study. Also, they are the ones who will have many more opportunities than she has.

Your comments have prompted me to ask you so many questions, Lucía, that I'll just list them here and will let you choose how to deal with them all, OK? ;-)
1. Why is Frank reluctant to teach Rita?
2. Why does Rita think Frank's room "just perfect"? Whose criteria is she applying? Why would she like to have one like that "one day"? Like what exactly?
3. Are "proper students" born or "brought up", in Rita's views? And in yours? Does Frnak have as high an opinion of them as Rita?
4. What/Who determines our "opportunities in life"?
Sorry for my curiosity, you get me started! ;-P
Love,
Gladys
1-Frank is reluctant to teah Rita or any other open university st because he doesn`t want to coach them.
2- I think it is the way the room is distributed with so many books and a big window and all that , it makes it just the right place for instruction.
Rita would probably like to have a room like that one day because she really feels that in fact she would have more than the room , in fact she would have Frank`s knowledge.
3- According to Rita`s views born sts are brought up. According to me, it has to do with the upbringing of children.
Frank doesn`t agree with Rita.
4- As far as opportunities in life are concerned, I think that there many factors that do contribute to them. People who bring you up. Culture, Social bacground, etc
Hi Lu!
Don't you think that intead of reluctant, Frank is quite afraid. He doesn't know how to do it, he hasn't think about it. Personally, the money is just an excuse, I think that he finds Rita quite challenging.
Anyway, this is just my viewpoint!!!
Welcome to the net and keep on blogging.
LOL
Yohi =)
Why might Frank be unwilling to coach Open University students, Lucía? (I find Yohana's comment most appropriate, BTW!).
And what do you mean when you say "born sts are brought up" in Rita's views?
I also wonder what you mean when you say the layout in Frank's room "makes it just the right place for instruction"? Is instruction bounded to a given environment, in your view? Above all, is instruction the main thing going on at a class? (cf. education).
In this entry, you've talked about educating, teachng, coaching and instructing as synonyms... Are they all the same to you?
Love,
Gladys
It could be that Frank is a bit scared but I think that it is that that causes some kind of relutance to teach her. Anyway, when I refer to environment I definitely think that instruction does have sth to do with environment. It acn help sts to feel at ease or it can make them feel really uncomfortable and therefore hinders them from the learning process.
As far as the terms of coaching, instruction and learning I think there is some kind of differece among them, however, I believe that in the case of Rita`s story they all overlap in some way or other.
The concepts are different indeed, Lucía, each bringing about conflicting associations and implications... Perhaps you can ask one of your partners to see if they can share our discussions in Theory of Education last year on the differences... Then, later in the course, you may tell me which you were mainly concerned in this post!
All the best,
Gladys
Does Frank encourage or prevent Rita from going into the world, or even educating her to become like the other students ?
